THE BUTTERFLY PROJECT

AN IMMERSIVE SOCIAL JUSTICE DATA ANALYTICS EXPERIENCE

The Butterfly Project Main Logo 800x600.png

Established in 2021, The Butterfly Project provides the training necessary to support careers for historically underrepresented groups in data/technology fields and provides real assistance for grass-root organizations committed to supporting marginalized groups in Louisville.

“If a butterfly flaps its wings at just the right time in just the right place, it can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away. It's chaos theory, but see, chaos theory isn't exactly about chaos. It's about how a tiny change in a big system can affect everything.”

~ Jay Asher

Educators, students, and nonprofits will participate in a four-day workshop to learn data analytics for social progress. Using open access data sources, participants will work with community nonprofits throughout the program using data to support their efforts of addressing systemic inequities that directly impact their community's residents.
During the program, participants will experience and learn:
  • Data analytics skills such as how to collect, clean, interpret, and visualize data, as well as how to identify data gaps and how these gaps affect outcomes.
  • How to leverage the power of data to strengthen the efforts of local nonprofits addressing social challenges impacting jobs, justice, education, health and housing.

“We are happy to be a community partner in The Butterfly Project! I have met with the students a few times and I am really excited to see the engagement. It is empowering to see the group light up about data research."

– Meka Kpoh, Black Birth Justice
